Stuart Gosswein’s current exhibition showcases several series: tornadoes, horses, and self-portraits. Each work conveys emotion beyond the subject being depicted. The landscapes with tornadoes capture an immense sense of scale along with human vulnerability in the face of nature’s wrath. The horses are noble and majestic. The self-portraits depict diverse themes, from his posing as an aristocrat to a death mask. Many of the paintings are accomplished with just black or white paint and employ an amazing technique that documents the brushstrokes used to construct the images.
The exhibit also includes several paintings that incorporate handprints along with a large painting called “Stela 16 and Altar J” which creates a mystical space with ethereal qualities. Stuart's art bridges human vulnerability with themes of mythology and spirituality, inviting introspection into the divine and the enigmatic.
The exhibit will be on display through July 27. Gallery/Studio hours are Fridays: 5-7 pm, Saturdays: 12-5 pm, and by appointment.
