Background Information: “A few weeks before my friend Sakiko died of cancer, she gave me a Styrofoam mannequin (head and shoulders) to use in my art. After her death, her spirit seemed to direct me to use it to make a skeletal effigy with prayer nails (such as those used in some African sculptures). The wire headdress is referential to a crown of thorns. Making the sculpture was a cathartic experience. While it stretches the definition of beauty and aesthetics, it explores the essence of mortality. The artwork provides a mechanism for channeling anger toward death while providing comfort as one contemplates the mystery of life. Sakiko was a unique individual with an earthy sense of humor. I am confident that she would have found her commemoration to be singularly amusing.” [Stuart Gosswein]
